About me and my Blog

I was about to start this introduction stating that for as long as I can remember I have always had an interest in Interiors but actually that is not strictly true. I spent many years of my early life not even being remotely affected by design or more accurately bad design. I would happily sit in our family living room surrounded by a collection of mismatched furniture, badly fitting curtains, an eclectic collection of pictures and ornaments and don't even get me started on the lighting (Sorry Mum). As a child you know no different and it is only when you start to go to new places and see how beautiful things can be that you start to think about it more.

I remember once when I was a teenager my parents went out for the day and I was trying to watch TV and desperately trying to ignore the bookcase next to the TV which was full of mismatching books and clutter all on display and I just could not let it pass. I took it upon myself to fix it and then got a bit carried away and ended up re-arranging the whole of the living room so I could finally watch TV without this distracting me. You will be pleased to know I no longer do this when visiting people, unless they ask me too of course.

For many years I did not explore this interest in great detail and merely thought of myself as a little too opinionated and being someone who knew what they liked and didn't like. I used to get asked all of the time what I thought about lots of things around the house and told that I had an eye for it. It was only when I started working for an Art Gallery in the Lake district that I started to incorporate this into my working life. I decided to take a local Interior Design course and then I took the plunge to do a Diploma in Interior Design.

I absolutely loved doing this and decided that I was good at deciding what I liked and what I would do in a certain space but I needed to be able to interpret other peoples specs and requirements too. I got a job at Mandarin Stone which is a high end tile retailer which has allowed me to do just that. I spend most of my time listening to customers briefs, asking the relevant questions and finding the right products for them and putting everything together and this is the part of the job I love.

Over the last few years I have also been refurbishing 2 houses in my spare time. I have learnt how to up-cycle all types of furniture, re-plaster walls, wallpaper, paint, tile, hang absolutely anything and more recently and with the least amount of experience I have taken on the garden! I am far from being green fingered but I am a trier and this mentality is what has kept me going. I am genuinely interested in knowing how to do all of these things and if I can give any of them a go myself, I will - Thank god for YouTube!

I hope to share some of my stories, knowledge and experience with you all but just like everyone else, I am always learning!

Bethan Xx
